A class of inquisitive ten year olds from St Paul’s Primary in Whitechapel, went on a school trip yesterday with architects from LOM, to the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) headquarters in Regent’s Park, a post-war modernist masterpiece, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun.

It was the first stage of architectural charity, Open-City, Architecture in Schools programme, where practices team up with schools to visit inspiring London buildings and culminates in creative model building workshops and a prize giving. This year’s brief is ‘Revealing Animal City habitats’ and pupils will learn through architecture about their local environment and who they share it with by designing and building homes for city birds, bees or bugs.

Simon Bird, senior associate, said: ‘Visiting such a great building has really helped to introduce the pupils to architectural principles. I can’t wait to see how this all translates into their own designs when we get back in the classroom and start model making.’

This is the first time LOM has taken part in Architecture in Schools which last year saw over 500 pupils from 14 London schools partner with 40 architects to learn more about the built environment and improve their skills in Maths, Art and Design Technology.
