Our commitment to the environment

LOM is a Carbon Neutral Organisation that is committed to tackling the climate emergency – embedding sustainability across everything we do. Our teams work closely with clients across the world and use intelligent design to help them reduce their carbon footprints.

While we learn and grow as a sustainable practice, we have already made significant strides towards securing a greener future. This goes further than designing buildings and interiors that meet sustainability criteria and accreditations. It means practicing what we preach as a net zero business, promoting best practice in the industry and moving the conversation forward about how to build a sustainable world.

“Our status as a Carbon Neutral Organisation reflects the major reduction in LOM's carbon impact over the past few years; but our journey to creating a fully sustainable built environment is just getting started.”

Richard Hutchinson, director

Becoming a net zero practice

A core part of the process has been looking at how we operate as a business. In 2020 LOM pledged to achieve net zero and do what we can to help keep global warming at or below 1.5°C compared with pre-industrial levels. This commitment has been certified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), who work with companies to define targets to reduce their emissions.

It took only six months for us to reach the first milestone, and in June 2021 LOM was certified as net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This includes all purchased energy and direct operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In July 2022 LOM was certified at a Carbon Neutral Organisation. We still need to offset our residual footprint – but this has been reduced to less than one tonne of carbon per employee per year. Beyond this achievement we are addressing these last emissions though a combination of Gold Standard Community based energy efficiency projects and Verified Carbon Standard renewable energy projects, which both offset carbon effectively over a short timeframe. In addition, to mark our achievement, we are planting a tree in the UK for each of our employees as a positive investment in the future.

Retrofit, reuse, recycle

Achieving a sustainable built environment means looking to the past as well as the future – at what is already standing, and how we can make our building stock work harder and be greener. LOM has a strong track record of retrofitting existing structures to fulfil their potential, inside and out.

We advocate the whole lifecycle assessment of buildings and the materials that make them.  Everything from the building fabric to soft furnishings must be carefully considered to minimise the lifetime carbon cost. As experts in building specification and integrating interior design and architecture, our holistic approach enables us to deliver projects for a more sustainable age.
