LOM were commissioned by a private client to design an innovative, environmentally exemplar and contemporary family home. Maresfield Gardens is located within the historic and highly sensitive Fitzjohns & Netherhall Conservation area in Hampstead, within a typology of 19th Century Arts & Crafts style houses. Our design approach drew inspiration from core principles of craftsmanship and design quality, synonymous with the Arts & Crafts period, to develop a contemporary architectural language which exceeded the aspirations of our client whilst responding to the highly sensitive planning context.
The design includes exemplar environmental credentials with a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 (zero carbon) target. A primary facade, incorporating floor-to-ceiling glazing to East and West aspects, maximises available daylight and frames views from key spaces. A secondary facade, comprising user-controlled automated sliding screens, provides solar shading and enables privacy to be controlled on a room-by-room basis.
